A cozy evening on the sofa can end pleasantly with a movie or a series . This is especially the case if you have the right TV . Because nothing is more annoying at the cozy TV evening than a TV set, which reflects neither image nor sound reasonable. If you are already annoyed about the picture or sound quality several times, then it will most likely be time to buy a new TV.

With the following product comparison we give you an insight into some bestsellers in this field. We compare the functions, equipment and services of the TV sets in detail. In addition, our subsequent guide provides important information about the TV. Here you will learn everything worth knowing and the features you should look for when buying a new device. We also took a look at the Stiftung Warentest, Öko Test and other guidebook portals to find current TV tests for you and introduce you to the test winners.

HD, Full HD or Ultra HD – what is the resolution of the TV?

When you buy a new TV, the question of resolution also comes up. Here you can choose from different resolutions. In detail, these are:

Standard Definition – SD The standard definition offers a resolution of 720 x 576 pixels.

High Definition – HD HD has a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels.

Full HD – offers you a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

Ultra HD -also known as UHD or 4K – resolves at 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.

Ultra HD II -I, also known as 8K, has eight times the HD resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels.

Do I really have to buy an Ultra HD TV?

This question can not be answered automatically with yes or no. Under certain circumstances, a Full HD TV can do you better services than a device with Ultra HD or even Ultra HD II. Thus, there is hardly a difference between UHD and Full HD for the human eye with TVs under 43 inches. Only with larger TVs from 50 inches upwards, this plays a role with smaller seating distances. Read more below in our guide.

Can I even watch Ultra HD broadcasts in Germany?

Again, the answer is rather divided into two parts. Because the German television stations emit quite a few content in Ultra HD. Exceptions are some sports broadcasts such as Formula 1 races on RTL or football matches at Sky Germany – although the number of these encounters is still very limited. Otherwise, you can usually only watch shopping channels in UHD. After all: ARD and ZDF want to broadcast in 2022, the World Cup in Qatar for the first time in Ultra HD.

On the other hand, if you have a Smart TV and a subscription to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, then an Ultra HD TV is definitely worth it. Because there are already numerous films and series in UHD. The same applies to Blu-ray films. But since many UHD TVs have a 4K upsacling, you can enjoy a better resolution on movies and TV shows that are not broadcast on UHD.

Which types of TV models are available for you to choose from?

Nowadays, in addition to the older versions, such as LCD or tube devices, there are other common types of televisions, which we would like to clarify below. For a modern TV, you should pay special attention to the display technology and features details.

Plasma screens and LCD screens used to be fashionable, but nowadays these technologies are less and less commercially available. Because the modern LED TVs have gradually replaced the plasma TVs from the market. The LCD screens have been superior to the LED TVs for some time in terms of speed and picture quality. But now the LEDs are number one. The LEDs are a further development of the LC displays, which use both liquid crystals to display the image.

LED TV

Especially widespread are LED TVs. These TVs are equipped with an LED display that offers the benefit of good lighting. Especially in comparison to older technologies LED TVs are usually very narrow. In terms of contrast and brightness, LED TVs also leave nothing to be desired.

A LED TV is perfect for you if you are looking for a good TV that scores with a solid price-performance ratio and also offers modern technology at top prices. So you get a real cinematic feeling in your own four walls and you can look forward to a solid quality in terms of the images, the contrast values and the brightness.

In addition to the display technology but also the resolution and the display size is very important. The same applies to the available connections, connectivity via WLAN and Smart TV functions, which should be available in any case.

LED screens are available in two different variations today:

  • Edge LED
  • Full-LED

The difference lies in the arrangement of the LEDs. Because with the Edge LED you will only find these on the sides of the screen, with the Full LED you will also have LEDs in the center of your TV display. In both cases, however, the backlight diodes always detect groups of liquid crystals. Thus, never a single cell is lit or darkened.

OLED TV

OLEDs are a further development of the LED displays. Compared to classic LED panels, you benefit from an optimized display of the image, especially with regard to brightness. The black values are also really impressive, which, in addition to the generally better luminosity, represents a central advantage of this advanced technology. This also applies to a clearer whiteness of which you will be impressed with the OLED technique. This results in a much better image contrast.

At the present time, OLED televisions are still recording quite high prices. However, if you want to keep up with the times and get yourself a TV that has a modern screen technology , then you should best turn to an OLED TV. This is especially recommended for gamers, where fast image sequences play a central role.

Also note that OLED displays consume much less energy than LED panels. A narrow design of these panels provides new design options for the manufacturer, so you need less space with such a device.

4K TV

With the additional description 4K is meant the resolution of the displays, which can represent a TV. There are only a few differences between 4K and UHD, so you can also count UHD TVs in this category. Compared to TVs that use HD Ready or Full HD resolution, you can look forward to a much sharper picture. 4K displays offer four times more pixels than Full HD. However, you should also have the appropriate material that the TV can play. In classical playback devices, for example Blu-rays are mentioned.

On the other hand, if you rely on streaming your movies, documentaries and series via Netflix or Amazon Video, you should have enough Internet access to play the high-resolution 4K content without any problems. 4K TVs are also available in both the LED and OLED versions for you to buy.

Smart TVs

This also offers the advantage that you can display contents directly from the net. This applies among other things to current news as well as data from the weather report. Depending on the manufacturer, these TVs also have a way to enter the desired programs by voice.

  • Use of services offered by streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon Video and numerous apps
  • Under certain circumstances control by voice command such as Alexa
  • At any time access to the media libraries of many TV channels
  • Reception of the current TV program via IP-TV
  • Price for smart TVs often higher than for conventional televisions
  • Additional costs for streaming services or IP-TV usage
  • Operation through the numerous possibilities more complex than with a conventional television

Curved TVs

Curved TVs are TVs that have a curved display. This creates better viewing angles and a spatial image is displayed, which many television fans prefer. However, Curved models are still very expensive, so you need to budget accordingly. The larger the display is, the stronger this mentioned effect of the spatial representation is pronounced.

So, it does not make much sense to rely on a Curved TV that only has a 42-inch screen. It’s best to look at this variant in an electronics store of your choice and convince yourself of the Curved technique. Be sure to turn off the demo material and turn on the classic TV program instead.

Extra tip: Ask for test equipment in a retail store while testing. These are often much cheaper available. If the display looks good and has no defects, you can be relatively sure you will not expect any quality issues.

What size is right for my TV?

Choosing the right size for a TV may not be easy. In general, pay attention to the interaction of size, resolution and seat pitch. Before buying a TV, first measure the distance between your seat and the location of the device. Then consider what resolution your TV should have: Full HD or UHD. Then you can easily calculate the seat distance:

  • Full HD: seat pitch divided by 2.5 = ideal screen size
  • UHD: seat pitch divided by 1.5 = ideal screen size

For example, the following values for the commercial sizes in Full HD result:

  • 32 inches: ideal seat distance 2 meters
  • 40 inches: ideal seat distance 2.5 meters
  • 48 inches: ideal seat distance 3 meters
  • 50 inches: ideal seat distance 3.2 meters

For an Ultra HD resolution, this looks like this:

  • With a screen size of 40 inches, the ideal seating distance is 1.5 meters.
  • With a screen size of 48 inches, the ideal seat distance is 1.8 meters.
  • With a screen size of 50 inches, the ideal seat pitch is 1.9 meters.
  • With a screen size of 55 inches, the ideal seat pitch is 2.1 meters.
  • With a screen size of 60 inches, the ideal seating distance is 2.3 meters.
  • With a screen size of 65 inches, the ideal seat distance is 2.5 meters.
  • With a screen size of 70 inches, the ideal seat distance is 2.7 meters.
  • With a screen size of 75 inches, the ideal seat pitch is 2.9 meters.

So you’ll soon realize that if you have a 32-48 inch Full HD TV, you’ll need a 2 to 3 meter distance to get a good picture. For example, with a TV with Ultra HD resolution, even with a 75-inch display, you do not even have to sit 3 meters away to enjoy the cinema atmosphere in your home’s four walls.

Important features that should make a good TV stand out

Resolution of the television display

Be sure to pay attention to the display resolution when choosing a suitable model. As a minimum standard, Full HD televisions are widespread today (resolution 1,920 x 1,080 pixels). If you have a bigger budget, it’s best to opt for a 4K TV. This means that you are always on the safe side, which is the support of all content in the coming years.

Especially users of streaming services should opt for this UHD or 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) to get the best possible picture quality. Depending on the user and the application, televisions with displays that only resolve in HD Ready (1,280 x 720 pixels) are suitable as second devices that are often used in German households in the bedroom or in the kitchen.

Display size

In addition to the resolution, the size of the display plays an important role. Depending on the size of the room and the distance to the screen, a specific diagonal should be used. Your personal preferences as well as the available budget are of course crucial in the selection of the display size. Keep in mind, however, that for larger displays, Full HD resolution will be slightly worse than a smaller model. Of course, you do not need to pay attention to this with 4K televisions. Be sure to evaluate your budget for your new TV and then commit yourself to a good TV. We have compiled some good models from the renowned brand manufacturers above.

Reception

Basically, you can receive TV pictures in Germany in four ways:

  1. antenna
  2. electric wire
  3. satellite
  4. Internet

Mostly in the descriptions of the televisions or on the Internet you will find these possibilities in the jargon: DVB-T for terrestrial antenna television, DVB-S for satellite TV, DVB-C for cable TV and IP TV for television over the Internet. Of course, you must pay attention to which reception option is available to you at home.

In most regions of Germany, but especially in metropolitan areas, you can already use DVB-T2 , the new standard for terrestrial antenna television. When cable television, in turn, there are regional differences with regard to the reception options. Satellite television is in turn received via a satellite dish , as long as you are allowed to attach it to the house. For television over the Internet you need a stable Internet access. Since you have certainly noticed that many televisions in our product comparison have a triple tuner, the reception usually plays only a limited role.

However, you usually still require a smartcard in antenna television or cable television in order to decrypt the encrypted content of private channels. For RTL, Sat1 and Co. send since the shutdown of analog television only in HD. These must be unlocked via cable and antenna reception at a charge. You will need to look for a CI + slot on the TV to use this smart card.

Otherwise, you can combine any TV that has an HDMI port with a convenient stick. For this, both the Amazon Fire Stick and the Google Chromecast come into question for you. Turn a classic TV into a Smart TV and access the Netflix and Co. program. Thus, there is no problem at all to expand the functionality of the TV set.

Connections of the TV

There are a few things you need to keep in mind when looking at the connections on your TV, especially if you focus on HDMI and USB ports. If possible, choose a TV that has multiple HDMI ports, preferably four. Because you need the high-definition multimedia interface connections for a variety of receivers, unless you have built a triple tuner. You also connect the Blu-ray player or DVD player and your game consoles to it.

You also need an HDMI connection for a Fire TV stick or Chromecast. And already it can be tight with the HDMI ports. You will need the USB connection to connect external storage media such as a USB stick or an external hard disk .

You also need a CI + slot, as noted before, to watch cable or antenna private TV channels such as Pro7 or Vox. The same applies to some private stations, which are also used via a smartcard. If you receive your TV program via satellite, you do not need the C + slot, because RTL and Co. still send via satellite in SD quality, for which you do not need a smart card.

If you still own older home theater systems or sound receivers that are not yet connected via HDMI, you may still need a cinch or optical digital output. However, you can sometimes connect speakers via Bluetooth, as long as speakers and TVs have Bluetooth. Headphones or even smaller speakers can be connected with a 3.5 millimeter jack or USB.

If you are still in possession of a video recorder, you must also pay attention to whether your TV has a Scart connection, which is often the case with newer televisions – especially with the Ultra HD TV sets. The easiest way is the connection of the smart TV to the home network. For this you usually only need WLAN – or alternatively LAN via Ethernet cable.
